Magic
Magic is a product of the stars sent to planets throughout the universe, allowing living beings to use various powers.
How to use magic?
Magic works as follows: by contracting your muscles, a wave comes out that hits surrounding things and affects them with your power. For example, someone with the power to manipulate shadows contracts his muscles, then when he relaxes them, a wave comes out and when it hits a shadow, he can manipulate it.
Certain gestures are well-known: for instance, snapping your fingers first requires you to force two fingers together and the moment the fingers snap, the muscles relax and the wave emerges from the palm of the hand. Or simply clenching your fist tightly and then releasing it.
Some powers require continuous muscle contraction.
Functioning of magic
Stars continually send concepts in waves into their surroundings, and when the concepts of several stars come into contact, they combine to create a new concept (e.g. fire and water make steam).
When enough concepts come into contact at the same time, a planet appears, with its own characteristics, materials and logic.
When concepts come into contact with an existing planet, it stores them and redistributes them to its living beings, who then gain powers. This is how there are cats that cancel distances, or foxes that blow bubbles.
If a planet has no living beings to pass on power to and accumulates too much, it creates a flesh star, a small object containing all the planet's concepts, to get rid of the excess.
Magic in the modern era
Today, everyone has his or her own magic power, and your power often determines the job you'll do. Generally speaking, either you choose a hard job without magic, which requires a lot of qualifications, or an easy job with magic, because chances are you're the only one, or nearly the only one, with the power needed.
All major progress in technology has been made thanks to people's magic, most discoveries are based on the combination of two or more very specific powers that state-hired magicians then spend their time trying to reproduce on a larger scale in order to democratize them. There are still plenty of new things to discover.
There's very little mechanics, no cars, and the animals build everything themselves with their hands and powers. There are, however, house batteries that can convert a magic wave into electricity.
