A quarrel too far is the story of how Merry was almost sent back to the spiders and lost contact with Rya following a dispute with the Silk thread institute.

Scenario

Merry eat an innocent wolfess

  • Scene 1 - Merry misses a job interview because his interviewer is racist to spiders and had hurtful words. Merry is in a very, very bad mood when he leaves.
  • Scene 2 - Outside, Merry has a minor altercation with a she-wolf, and immediately eats her to cool off. Another wolf sees him do this and goes to call the Silk thread institute, but Merry eats him too while he's on the phone with them, and the staff overhear everything on the phone.

Merry argues with the institution

  • Scene 3 - Once back in his cave, the institution contacts him and argues with him as usual, but threatens to send him back to insect country because they can't stand having to deal with his screw-ups any longer. Merry hangs up the phone in a rage.
  • Scene 4 - At night, Merry thinks about the implications. In the middle of the night, he contacts Rya and gets her to come over.
  • Scene 5 - Merry explains everything. Rya tries to reassure him, but she's clumsy and Merry doesn't feel any better.
  • Scene 6 - The next day, Merry goes back to his job search as if nothing had happened, but this time keeps his nose clean, even though everyone is still racist towards him.

Merry can't stand the wolves' racism and look for ways to cope

  • Scene 7 - He returns home exhausted from a hard day of enduring racism without answering, and wonders if it would be that bad to go back to the spiders in the end. However, he decides that he doesn't want to have to choose between the devil and the deep blue sea, and decides not to choose.
  • Scene 8 - The next day, Merry calls the institution himself to talk things over, and they tell him that he has to find a way to cope and that the integration of spiders into society involves these kinds of difficult moments when you have to put up with racism, but Merry explains that he's no hero and that he can't make this kind of sacrifice. Merry then realizes as he talks that the closeness he's managed to build with Rya is proof that it's possible for spiders and mammals to coexist, and he realizes that if he doesn't want to go back with the spiders, it's only because of her.
  • Scene 9 - Rather than find a job just to find a job, Merry decides to apply to be a public mount instead, so that his quirkiness can be of service to mammals, and his desire to feel weight on him gets fulfilled by them.
